“Code Cares” Program Receives Statewide Recognition

Many Garland citizens have benefited from a volunteer assistance program developed by the City’s Code Compliance Department.  That program, “Code Cares,” was recognized by the Texas Municipal League during its Annual Conference and Exhibition, held in San Antonio on October 28-31.  The City of Garland was presented the 2008 Municipal Excellence Award in Public Works in recognition of its “Code Cares” program.

Preserving neighborhood and housing aesthetics is often difficult as a community ages.  The City of Garland Code Compliance Department initiated “Code Cares” to help individuals maintain their property when they are confronted with hardships.  In this staff-developed program, code inspectors volunteer their time to do yard work and make minor home repairs for elderly and indigent residents.  Since its inception, “Code Cares” has drawn the interest of churches and community groups, with more than 100 citizens assisting city staff.  In addition to helping citizens in need and maintaining neighborhoods, this program saves valuable tax dollars by negating the need for further inspections and notices and avoiding the cost of third-party cleanups.  To date, the citizens of Garland have saved nearly $10,000 due to the success of “Code Cares.”

On hand at the conference to accept the award were members of the Garland City Council and Staff.

The Texas Municipal League is a voluntary association of more than 1200 Texas cities.  Its primary objective is to serve the needs and advocate the interests of Texas cities, and it is the largest organization of its kind in the United States.  The City of Garland is a member of the Texas Municipal League.
