If someone visits your home to collect information, make sure they have a valid ID badge with a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark. The Census Bureau will never ask for your Social Security number, your bank account or credit card numbers or donations of any sort. They will not contact you on behalf of a political party or candidate.
The 2020 Census form will include a handful of questions that are asked about every person in a household:
Person 1, the individual filling out the form, is also asked a few additional questions such as whether the home is owned or rented and some clarifying questions about how many people should be counted at that address.
An accurate count of the population is required by law and serves as the basis for fair political representation. State population counts from the census are used to reapportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives across the 50 states. State and local officials use census results to help redraw congressional, state, and local district boundaries. Governments and nonprofit organizations rely on census data to determine the need for new roads, hospitals, schools, and other public-sector investments. Census data are also vital to businesses as a key source of information. Census data were used to distribute more than $675 billion in federal funds to states and local communities for health, education, housing, and infrastructure programs each year.
The confidentiality of census records is protected by Title 13 of the U.S. Code. No data or tabulation may be produced that could be used to identify an individual. Individual records may not be released for at least 72 years.
